Saving Freud

The Freud Museum warmly welcomes renowned journalist and author, Andrew Nagorski, to speak about his new biography of Sigmund Freud and his extraordinary escape to London as a refugee in 1938.

Saving Freud (2022, Icon) is both an incisive new biography of Freud and a group portrait of the circle of friends who saved his life after the Anschluss in 1938. The group included a Welsh physician, Napoleon’s great-grandniece, an American ambassador, Freud’s devoted daughter Anna, and his personal doctor.

This talk will be given on Holocaust Memorial Day 2023, an international day of remembrance in a world scarred by genocide. Annually, it is honoured on 27 January which marks the anniversary of liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. Sigmund Freud and his family were forced out of Austria as a result of this regime and lived the rest of their lives in exile in London, in the house now known as the Freud Museum. Holocaust Memorial Day remembers not only those lost to World War II, but also subsequent genocides and those displaced as a result of war.

Andrew Nagorski was born in Scotland to Polish parents, moved to the United States as an infant and has rarely stopped moving since, serving as Newsweek’s bureau chief in Hong Kong, Moscow, Rome, Bonn, Warsaw, and Berlin. He is the author of seven previous critically acclaimed books, including Hitlerland and The Nazi Hunters. He now lives in St. Augustine, Florida, and continues to write for numerous publications.
