Kabarett Fledermaus interior, Josef Hoffmann, 1907, Theatermuseum, Vienna

Learn about Vienna’s unique cultural spaces over your morning coffee in Freud’s quintessentially Viennese home.

Read any cultural history of ‘Freud’s Vienna’, and you will inevitably find yourself following in the footsteps of a glittering parade of significant figures and their acolytes into the half-public, half-private spaces of Vienna’s cafés, and from the cafés into similarly heterotopic spaces and places of culture and entertainment.

The Vienna café achieved mythical status for its importance as the birthplace of dramatic developments in the visual and literary arts, sciences, music and philosophy. Vienna’s Kabarett Fledermaus, associated with the Secessionists and the Wiener Werkstätte, was famous for ‘Kleinkunst,’ miniature plays, operas and readings which satirised and caricatured the significant events taking place on Vienna’s famous Ringstrasse.

Vienna 1900 specialist Diane V. Silverthorne brings to life the figures who inhabited these influential spaces from the late 1800s to the outbreak of war and collapse of the Habsburg Empire.
