Poet and playwright Glyn Maxwell will read W. H. Auden’s great elegy ‘In Memory of Sigmund Freud’ – a meeting of two thinkers he regards as the greatest of the 20thcentury – and explore the fields where poetry and psychoanalysis meet.

“The best dramatic poet now at work in English.’ Nick Laird, the Daily Telegraph

“The most compelling, original, charismatic and poetic guide to poetry that I can remember. A handbook written from the heart by one of the true modern masters of the craft.’ Simon Armitage [on On Poetry]

“The best book about poetry I have ever read.” The Guardian [on On Poetry]

“A dazzling, heroic and virtuoso endeavour from one of our finest poets.” Carol Ann Duffy [on The Big Calls]

“Genius. A work of both tradition and sedition… Playful, erudite and passionate, a hymn to the state of the nation.” Joelle Taylor [on The Big Calls]

“A magic trick, a homage… a tome dipped in a dream, a renegade covers album, and completely his own.” Caroline Bird [on The Big Calls]

“Beautiful and moving and authentic poetry can be written today; and we know this not least because Glyn Maxwell is writing it.” The New Republic

“Clearly the work of the major poet of his generation, boldly expanding the canvas and means of his art.” James Wood [on The Sugar Mile]

“How incredibly musical Maxwell’s work is: these poems come alive when they are read aloud… This is a poet who knows as well as any how to make a human sound.” Adam Newey, The Guardian [on One Thousand Nights And Counting: Selected Poems]

Glyn Maxwell

After thirty years of writing, publishing, and teaching poetry, Glyn Maxwell has recently been turning his attention to the fields of psychology and philosophy. He has long been devoted to the work of W. H. Auden, whose 1939 elegy illustrates the huge significance he ascribed to Freud, and was written at a time when the free world seemed imperilled as never before. Maxwell’s latest poetry books are The Big Calls, about the recent government of the UK, and How The Hell Are You, which was shortlisted for the T S Eliot Prize in 2020. He is currently writing Silly Games To Save The World, a book combining politics, psychology, philosophy and games, which is published in fortnightly instalments on Substack.
