Philosophy in Prison
Socrates in prison
For someone incarcerated in the dilapidated UK prison system, one might think that philosophy is the last thing they need. But philosophy has features that make it particularly appropriate inside, especially philosophy conducted in the Socratic manner, by conversation. The charity Philosophy in Prison runs Socratic conversations in prisons; and Professor Mary Margaret McCabe (‘MM’) shall argue that this has a peculiarly apt connection to justice.
Complement your visit to the Freud Museum with one of our weekly tours or talks led by staff, volunteers and guest speakers.
The talks are free with your admission ticket. Book your admission ticket now!
SPEAKER
Professor Mary Margaret McCabe (‘MM’) is Chair of the Board of Trustees at the charity Philosophy in Prison. Philosophy in Prison is a charity set up in 2018 to promote philosophical education in prisons and to explore the practical and philosophical principles that this involves. MM works on ancient philosophy, on ethics and on epistemology. She is Professor of Philosophy Emerita and Fellow of King’s College London, a Fellow of the British Academy, and Honorary Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge. In 2022-3 she was the President of the Aristotelian Society and the Honorary President of the Classical Association; she was previously President of the Mind Association (2016) and the British Philosophical Society (2009-12). Her interest in prison education is of long standing; her mother was a criminologist, her husband was a judge; and her early research was on the philosophy of punishment.
The event will be held on the first floor of the Museum during regular opening hours. Unfortunately the Freud Museum does not have step-free access at this time.
