Published a few years after Freud and Breuer’s ground-breaking Studies on Hysteria, this early work of Freud’s introduces many themes that would come to be fundamental to psychoanalysis, such as psychical defence, repression and the unconscious. ‘The Aetiology of Hysteria’ is a crucial text for an understanding of the origins of psychoanalysis.

 

The group will meet from 12 September – 24 October (Please note: There will be a week’s recess on 10 October). The weekly meetings will take place online on Tuesdays, 17.30 – 19.00 BST/GMT. All attendees will be emailed the recording of each session afterwards to catch up. The group’s capacity is limited to 10 people only.


Tom DeRose – Group Facilitator

Tom DeRose is Research Manager at the Freud Museum London. His research focusses on the cultural and philosophical aspects of Freudian theoryHis most recent publication is ‘The Battle for the Voice: Psychoanalysis and Music’, in ed. Tambling, The Bloomsbury Handbook to Literature and Psychoanalysis (Bloomsbury, 2023).
