This seminar will consider the cinematic trope of the mother and the powerful image of the maternal figure in contemporary dramas which tend to challenge, or reconfigure, notions of caring, ethics, love and selfhood in startling and unexpected ways. The lecture will draw on a range of films from The Power of the Dog (Campion, 2021), Honeyland (2019) to Safe (Haynes, 1995) and will consider the work of contemporary theorists such as Julietta Singh and bell hooks.
