Museums at Night 2013

Martin Creed at the Freud Museum London

Museums at Night runs once a year and sees museums and galleries across the country open their doors after hours for visitors to explore their fantastic collections at night. The Freud Museum is delighted to announce that as one of the winning venues in the Connect10 competition it will be hosting Turner Prize-winning artist, Martin Creed.

Creed’s enigmatic works explore the human condition through art, just as the psychoanalyst’s pursuit of truth leads them into the recesses of the unconscious mind. He has said himself: "I think psychoanalysis is quite similar to what I do. My work is about trying to define the Big Soup that the world is”.

Using free-association the event will take the format of an unconfined interaction between Martin and the audience, traversing whichever themes arise in his exploration of his and his audience’s unconscious. What better place than Sigmund Freud’s final home to grant the artist the space and inspiration to do what psychoanalysis is famous for: delving into the unknown to make sense of the self and the world.

Martin Creed’s Connect10 idea:

This will be a spontaneous blend of talking, music playing, discussion and downloading of the various thoughts and pieces of information racing through Martin’s brain. The topics addressed in Martin’s performance could possibly relate to the host venue, its history, its collection, its people or indeed simply Martin’s spur-of-the-moment thoughts and feelings in a unique and engaging way. Martin believes the best way to talk about art is to try and make a work, right there in front of people, so that’s what he intends to do.

Museums at Night 2013 takes place in hundreds of museums, galleries and heritage sites across the UK during the evenings of Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 16-18.

The Connect10 competition is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
