Introducing Psychoanalysis

A 12 week evening course exploring psychoanalysis beyond Freud

Sigmund Freud’s development of psychoanalysis opened up fresh possibilities for understanding mental life, but also fresh challenges. In the wake of his discoveries new generations of analysts took up his project, making insightful contributions but also radical revisions of Freud’s work.

Through our fascinating introductory course, discover the figures that shaped psychoanalysis as we know it today. Taking Freud’s ideas as our starting point, we will explore the works of Carl Jung, Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott and Jacques Lacan.

No prior knowledge will be assumed and you will be guided by an experienced tutor with many years' teaching experience.

Tutor: Keith Barrett BA PhD
Having received his PhD from the Wellcome Centre for the History of Medicine at University College London, Dr Barrett specialises in both philosophy and psychoanalysis and has taught at several leading institutions, including Imperial College and Birkbeck College.
