So what was Freud looking for in Athens?

An Online Multi-Perspective Lecture Exploring Freud’s 1936 Essay A Disturbance of Memory on the Acropolis.

“By the evidence of my senses I am now standing on the Acropolis, but I cannot believe it.”Sigmund Freud, 1936

Reflecting and expanding on the themes explored in the Freud Museum’s acclaimed exhibition Tracing Freud on the Acropolis, curated by Marina Maniadaki (26 July 2023-7 January 2024), this multi-perspective conference brings together four scholars with different points of view.

While critically examining Freud’s extraordinary reaction to his visit to the Acropolis and offering new insights into psychoanalysis, cultural memory and the interplay between place and identity, this event will also serve as an introduction to the Italian-language performance ‘Father & Freud’, which the Freud Museum will host on 22 and 23 April.
