Analysis Terminable and Interminable, Sigmund Freud, Standard Edition Volume XXIII

Sigmund Freud’s texts are endlessly fascinating and provocative, and are ideal for reading and discussing in a group environment.

We will read through a specific text line by line and then discuss sections together, following the flow of Freud’s arguments and exploring his ideas as we go along. No prior knowledge of psychoanalysis is required, and the aim of the group will be to develop a shared understanding of some of Freud’s most influential texts. Discussions will be recorded and shared with participants after each session.

One of Freud’s final texts, Analysis Terminable and Interminable (1937) is a profound meditation on the nature and limits of the psychoanalytic cure. Posing questions that had troubled him from the very beginning of his psychoanalytic career, in Analysis Terminal and Interminable Freud offers a compelling account of the development of psychoanalytic technique, and a sober reflection on the ‘time consuming business’ of freeing someone from their ‘neurotic symptoms, inhibitions and abnormalities of character’.

Tom DeRose – Group Facilitator

Tom DeRose founded the Freud Museum staff and volunteer reading group in 2015, which has been meeting weekly ever since. He has a long-standing interest in the philosophical aspects and cultural implications of Freud’s theories, and has published articles exploring these areas, most recently on the affinities between the thought of Freud, Wagner and Nietzsche for the Wagner Journal (July 2017). He is currently writing chapters on psychoanalysis and music for The Bloomsbury Handbook of Literature and Psychoanalysis (forthcoming).
