An international online conference held to mark the 100 year anniversary of the publication of Freud’s works by the Hogarth Press. Recordings will be sent out on the Monday after the conference.
From its very beginnings, psychoanalysis found a rich vein of inspiration in literature; the insights of Sophocles, Goethe and Dostoevsy laid the foundations for the clinical innovations that Freud developed in his consulting room.
This conference, which brings together clinicians, academics, poets and performers, marks the 100th Anniversary of the first publication of Sigmund Freud’s work by the Hogarth Press, founded by Virginia and Leonard Woolf. We will focus both on Freud’s readings of English literature, and the manner in which English Literature ‘reads’ Freud. Shakespeare was crucial for Freud; the ‘man from Stratford’ is Freud’s most quoted author apart from Goethe, and is centre stage in this conference. How does Freud read Shakespeare and how can we ‘read Freud with Shakespeare’ are key concerns. We will also explore Freud’s seismic impact on 20th century English literature, taking in Virginia Woolf, W.H. Auden and H.D..
By reading English Literature with Freud, as well as reading Freud with English Literature, we will aim to uncover fascinating new insights in both the clinical and literary fields.
The conference will be chaired by the Freud Museum’s Research Manager, Tom DeRose.
