Buddhism is a world religion with a history stretching back over two and a half thousand years: it has sophisticated tradition of meditation practice, a highly developed psychology of its own, and a deep understanding of the spiritual path. Psychoanalysis by contrast is merely 130 years old, and offers a systematic method of psychotherapy and a theory of the human mind. On this course we will explore the key points on which Buddhism and Psychoanalysis converge – and note the equally significant differences between them – comparing the practice of Buddhist meditation with the practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and studying the similarities and differences between Buddhist psychology and Psychoanalytic psychology. No previous knowledge of Buddhism is required, as we will set out the basic principles of the teachings of the Buddha, and compare these with the aims and methods of psychoanalysis, drawing on the writings of the current generation of scholars who have trained in both traditions and are working to build bridges between them. The course will lead to a consideration of the relationship between philosophy, psychotherapy and spirituality.

Speaker:

Keith Barrett BA PhD received his first degree in philosophy from Oxford University after having spent three years working as a nursing assistant in psychiatric hospitals. It was in this practical context that Keith first encountered existentialism and psychoanalysis. He then began postgraduate studies on both Freud and Heidegger, leading finally to a PhD from the Wellcome Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL for a dissertation on ‘Freud’s Self-Analysis’. Keith has been a philosophy teacher for over 20 years, and has been delivering courses at the Freud Museum for over a decade, where he has developed a series of introductory lectures on Freud, psychoanalysis after Freud, and exploring the overlap of philosophy and psychoanalysis.
