More about this event

Join us on Saturday, 7th December, from 9:00 to 10:30 am for a special coffee morning at the Freud Museum. Begin with delicious coffee, tea and cake. Lord David Freud, as our special guest on this occasion, will personally guide us through the house and share unique family stories. You’ll learn about what the home was like in the years before it opened to the public, including the rich history of the Freud family gatherings and the legacy of Anna Freud.

This unique tour of the Museum, which will include parts of Freud’s home that are normally off-limits to visitors, will allow you to wander through rooms filled with his personal treasures, including the iconic psychoanalytic couch, and to delve into the legacy of Anna Freud, a pioneer in child psychoanalysis. And all in the company of Lord David Freud who will share his unique stories and anecdotes about what the home – and the people who lived here – were like long before the house was transformed into the Freud Museum in 1986.

You are welcome to continue to browse the Museum and Gift Shop when we open to the public at 10.30am.

Lord David Freud is the President of the Freud Museum. His career began in journalism, training in Cardiff with the Western Mail before joining the Financial Times, where he spent his last four years writing the Lex Column. In 1984, he transitioned to finance, focusing on equity markets, company flotations, and transport. One of his most notable achievements was the flotation of Eurotunnel amidst Black Monday, ultimately serving as Vice Chairman at UBS until his retirement in 2003. He chronicled this experience in his book Freud in the City.

A self-proclaimed “spectacular failure” as a retiree, Lord Freud became CEO of the Portland Trust, working on both sides of the Israel/Palestine divide and designing the initiative to build Rawabi, the first planned Palestinian city. He later produced a 2007 report, Reducing Dependency, Increasing Opportunity, for the UK Labour Government, which led to his role as Conservative Minister for Welfare Reform (2010-16). During this time, he worked on reshaping the British welfare system, including creating Universal Credit to reduce poverty traps. In 2009, he created the Grandmentors programme with Volunteering Matters, providing mentors for children leaving care. He became President of Volunteering Matters in 2019.
