SPEAKERS
James Putnam is an independent curator and writer. He directed the British Museum’s Contemporary Arts and Cultures Programme (1999-2003), was Visiting Scholar in Museum Studies at New York University (2003) and Senior Lecturer at Central Saint Martins, UAL (2004-2011). Between 2012 and 2021 he was also Senior Research Fellow at UAL. He has curated exhibitions for major museums, arts festivals and biennials in Europe and Asia. Since 1999 he has curated contemporary artists’ projects at the Freud Museum, London. These have included Sophie Calle, Sarah Lucas Ellen Gallagher, Mat Collishaw, Noble & Webster, Miroslaw Balka, Andreas Hofer and Gavin Turk. His publications include Art and Artifact – The Museum as Medium (Thames & Hudson, 2010), about the interaction between artists and museums. He has regularly curated Collateral Events and independent projects at the Venice Biennale since 2007.
Gideon Rubin, born 1973, is an artist based in London. He has had numerous international solo and group exhibitions; most recently: Moon Above Water, Galerie Karsten Greve, Paris (2024); I Dont Want to Forget, curated by Marie Shek, Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2024); Living Memory: Louise Bourgeois, Nicolas Godin & Gideon Rubin’, curated by Beth Greenacre at All Saint’s Chapel, London (2023); Summer Tale, curated By Cici Xiang, K11 Art Foundation, Shanghai (2023)
In 2023, Rubin’s recent monograph, ‘Look Again’ was published by Anomie publishing, with texts by Jennifer Higgie and Matthew Holman.

The event will be held on the first floor of the Museum during regular opening hours. Unfortunately the Freud Museum does not have step-free access at this time. Advance booking is highly recommended as capacity is limited.
