We are sorry to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances this event has been postpone. We hope to set a new date in 2023.

Sigmund Freud is a compelling and stylish narrative of Freud’s life and most startling ideas, setting them in their original social context, and arguing why they still matter to us now.

Join historian and author, Matt Ffytche for a discussion on his latest book, with psychoanalyst and author, Dany Nobus.

However much his work has been reviled or contested, Sigmund Freud remains one of the most significant thinkers of the last one hundred and fifty years. He founded psychoanalysis, and his vision of human behaviour and the unconscious mind provided a compelling paradigm for the understanding of society for much of the twentieth century. In this illuminating new account, Matt Ffytche draws on the latest research into Freud’s impact and historical context, making the case for his continuing relevance in analysing the vagaries, resistances, and desires of the human mind. Engaging and accessible, Sigmund Freud appeals to both students and the general reader, as well as anyone fascinated with mental health, dreams, and the hidden depths of human experience.

Matt Ffytche is a Professor in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex. His previous publications include Psychoanalysis in the Age of Totalitarianism (edited with Daniel Pick, Routledge, 2016) and The Foundation of the Unconscious: Schelling, Freud and the Birth of the Modern Psyche (Cambridge University Press, 2011). Since 2016 he has edited the journal Psychoanalysis and History.
