Sigmund Freud was born on 6 May 1856 in Freiberg, Moravia (today Příbor, Czech Republic), to a family of wool merchants. At the time, Freiberg was part of the vast Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Sigmund was the first of eight children of Jakob and Amalia Freud, although his first brother, Julius, died after only six months. Not long afterwards, his father’s business collapsed and the family were forced to leave Freiberg. In 1860, the family moved to the bustling metropolis of Vienna, capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

In 1865, when Freud was nine years old he entered the Leopoldstädter Kommunal-Realgymnasium, a prominent high school Vienna. He was a hard-working and dedicated pupil, graduating from the Matura in 1873 with honours.

Freud entered the University of Vienna at age 17. After originally considering studying law, he joined the medical faculty at the university where he studied under Ernst Brücke, who was to be a huge influence over his work. In 1876 Freud spent four weeks at the Darwinist professor Carl Claus's zoological research station in Trieste, dissecting hundreds of eels in an inconclusive search for their male reproductive organs.

He graduated with an MD in 1881, and in 1882, Freud began his medical career at the Vienna General Hospital.
