Freud at the National Portrait Gallery – Michael Molnar

When Sigmund Freud visited London in 1908 he recorded his impressions of the paintings he saw at the National Portrait Gallery, from Shakespeare to Byron.

Freud scholar Michael Molnar recounts the intriguing story of Freud’s few days in London, including his trip to the NPG, through his letters and notes.

  • I’ve thought of Michael very often over the years, especially in relation to his masterful edit of the Freud diaries. I hope that he is well, and that our paths cross again before too long. I really look forward to listening to his full account of Freud’s responses to the NPG paintings. I love the idea that we are being introduced, as Michael says, to Freud’s “notes for himself”. This is a wonderful project!
