FREUD'S 'OBSESSIVE ACTIONS AND
RELIGIOUS
PRACTICES' (1907) REVISITED
Howard Cooper
On the centenary of Freud's first
text to deal overtly with religion, Rabbi and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist
Howard Cooper will lead a discussion on the themes of the paper: in what
ways are obsessive or compulsive actions a form of 'individual religiosity'
and in what ways can religion or religious practices be considered as examples
of 'a universal obsessional neurosis'? In order to participate fully in
the conversation, participants will be asked to read Freud's paper beforehand.

RE-EXAMINING RITUAL:
AN ANTHROPOLOGIST'S VIEW
Audrey Cantlie
An anthropologist looks at religious
ritual in the light of Freud's paper on obsessive actions. Can Freud's
theses be sustained? What is distinctive about anthropological theories
of ritual and how have these theories sometimes been influenced by the
anthropologist's own religious beliefs? Audrey Cantlie is Reader Emeritus
in Social Anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies.

"A TOOTH OUT OF THE CALIPH'S
JAW" :
ARCHAEOLOGY AND ORIENTALISM
IN EARLY PSYCHOANALYSIS.
Frank Scherer (Toronto)
From Greece to Egypt, from Pompeii
to Giza, Frank Scherer traces the 'archaeological metaphor' in Freud's
writings as it pertains to hysteria, repression, Moses, and the influence
of orientalism in early psychoanalysis. Pompeii is a nodal point in the
story, as is Freud's Gradiva analysis. This will also be a chance to see
some of William Cobbing's Gradiva Project which opens officially
on December 5.
